In this disposable culture where obsolescence is planned, and glitz and gimmicks are preferred over true craftsmanship, it is pure joy to behold a proper yacht in the traditional meaning of the word--one made of wood and destined to last. Rebecca, a classic, 60-foot schooner built of exquisite materials by extraordinary boatwrights, is just such a yacht and proof that wooden boat building is alive and well today on the island of Martha's Vineyard, Mass.
Rebecca was born on designer and builder Nat Benjamin's drafting table, where the drawings began in 1995. She then came to life in a shed just across the road from the Gannon and Benjamin Marine Railway (G&B) boatyard where Benjamin and his partner, Ross Gannon, have been building and maintaining wooden boats for the last 20 years.
